Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS)

KXLY April 13, 2021 6:05 AM Brian O Connell - Forbes Advisor Posted: Updated: April 15, 2021 4:37 AM Treasury Inflation Protected Securities, or TIPS, are bonds issued by the U.S. government that offer protection against inflation plus modest interest payments. “Many investors save and invest so they can spend in the future,” says Wes Crill, head of investment strategists at Dimensional Fund Advisors in Austin, Texas. “For investors prioritizing preservation of purchasing power, TIPS can contribute to that goal by mitigating the impact of unexpectedly high inflation.” How Do TIPS Work? As fixed income securities, TIPS work a lot like the bonds you’re already familiar with. You purchase debt issued by the U.S. government, and receive regular interest payments on the face value, or the par value, of the securities. When the TIPS’s term is up, you are repaid the original amount loaned to the government.

Fed QE rejig: Don t call it a twist, Fed QE rejig will only marginally help yields

The Federal Reserve’s plan to recalibrate bond purchases to better match outstanding U.S. debt is likely to provide only marginal support to longer-dated bonds battered by expectations of faster growth and higher inflation, as analysts caution the move shouldn’t be dubbed as a stealth “twist”. The New York Fed said on Thursday that it could make minor adjustments to keep bond purchases proportional to the outstanding supply. The comments by Lorie Logan, an executive vice president at the New York Fed and the manager of the System Open Market Account (SOMA), briefly sent long-dated yields lower, though they rose back on Friday ahead of new long-dated supply next week.

3 iShares ETFs to Help Curb Your Inflation Fears

3 iShares ETFs to Help Curb Your Inflation Fears April 8, 2021 Gold, commodities, and Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) are just a few ways to hedge against inflation. iShares offers ETFs tailored to all three. “We’re going to cross 3% inflation at some point this year on an annualized basis,” said Dave Nadig, Chief Investment Officer and Director of Research of ETF Trends and ETF Database. “Everybody I trust and all the research I’ve done suggests it’s going to be pretty transitory, though. Sustained inflation would require a radical shift in consumption; something would have to be the catalyst.” These three funds can help make a portfolio inflation-ready:
