On Monday night, the Lee County Homeless Coalitioin honored those homeless people who have died with a vigil. A memorial day, of sorts, for the lives lost.
27 candles were lit and placed into 27 white paper bags with all 27 names of the homeless people who have died in Lee County.
The Lee County Homeless Coalition has held this vigil every year for the past 24 years. But, some of the homeless say that something needs to be done to make sure no more people die.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and two of its deputies over the fatal shooting of Kurt Reinhold.
42-year-old Reinhold was approached by deputies from the department’s Homeless Outreach Team in San Clemente on September 23, 2020.
The deputies say they tried to stop Reinhold, who was homeless at the time, from walking in the middle of El Camino Real. Witnesses stated that he was walking in the middle of the street in ongoing traffic and that cars were honking and weaving around to avoid him.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â A coalition of community, nonprofit and business leaders is working to provide safe emergency shelter for residents of the Heartside neighborhood who are experiencing homelessness.
The group, led by Mel Trotter Ministries and Guiding Light and including the City of Grand Rapids and Kris Elliott of Evergreen Companies, has leased space at 250 Ionia Ave. SW, a news release said Tuesday.
Experts say as many as 100 adults could be looking for housing every night in the coming winter months.
Work has begun to transform the space into a warming center and overnight shelter for those experiencing homelessness, many of whom are currently staying in tents in Heartside Park and other locations around the city.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â Tents lined alongside the fence at Heartside Park in Grand Rapids show just a part of the homelessness issue in the city.
âWe go as far south as 29th Street where weâve discovered camps and people down there, and as far north as Ball, Perkins, and beyond,â said Capt. Michael Waldron.
Waldron is a 17-year member of the Grand Rapids Fire Department who is now part of the cityâs âHomeless Outreach Team.â
The group formed in the spring, originally to educate people experiencing homelessness on the coronavirus, but its goal now is to bring the resources they need to them.
