Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said he had already spoken with Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch twice in the Democrat’s first ten full days in the top leadership post and the new speaker expressed an interest in “meeting on a regular basis for a cup of coffee or breakfast.”
“That didn’t happen with Mike Madigan,” Durkin told the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Surprise.”
Durkin said “time will tell” if Welch holds to the promise of reaching across the aisle that the Hillside Democrat made in his speech just minutes after ascending to the powerful position leading the House two weeks ago.

JACKSONVILLE State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville, has been appointed by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin to serve as Assistant Republican Leader for the 102nd General Assembly.
A leader’s responsibilities include helping to lead the House Republican Caucus in bipartisan discussions, crafting public policy, mentoring new legislators and rounding up votes for important pieces of legislation.
“I am honored to continue to serve as Assistant Republican Leader for our caucus,” said Davidsmeyer. “It is important that conservative values are heard when legislation is debated in Springfield. I have always spoken my mind on legislation and policies to share their effects on our state and our region.”
