In a matter of days, relative newcomer Rep. Elise Stefanik could ascend into the House Republican leadership by a vote of the GOP conference.
Stefanik, elected to the House in 2014 at age 30, is poised to succeed Rep. Liz Cheney as the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, according to lawmakers and Republican aides familiar with a planned vote as early as Wednesday.
It’s the No. 3 House GOP leadership position, and lawmakers have grown frustrated with Cheney, whose vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump and views on the party agenda have put her increasingly at odds with the rank-and-file in her party who want to present a unified front ahead of the critical 2022 midterm elections.

Ohio Republican Party Censures, Calls for Resignation of Rep. Anthony Gonzalez
The Ohio Republican Party censured and called for the resignation of Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) for his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump earlier this year.
On Friday, the state GOP’s governing board called on Gonzalez to resign after a divided vote. They also voted to censure him and nine other Republicans who impeached Trump and lent “their votes to support the unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment proceeding against” him, according to the resolution.
Gonzalez “resorted to emotional conclusions that misplaced blame on President Trump, the President of Law and Order and America First,” their resolution read. “We believe that Congressman Gonzalez knowingly and willfully violated his oath of office.”
Congressional Republicans move to purge Liz Cheney from leadership
The Republican Party in the House of Representatives is moving decisively to purge Representative Liz Cheney, the third-ranking member of the leadership, over her continued denunciation of Donald Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy made it clear on Fox News that he had “lost confidence” in Cheney. And on Wednesday, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, the second-ranking Republican, called for Cheney’s removal and threw his support to Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, one of the main defenders of Trump during two impeachment trials.
