Shontel Brown defeated Nina Turner on Tuesday in Ohio s 11th Congressional District Democratic primary.
Brown, a Cuyahoga County Council member, was backed by Democratic establishment figures like Hillary Clinton and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.). Turner, a former state senator and co-chair of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, was endorsed by progressives, including Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Turner went into the primary with more name recognition,
Politico reports, and in May internal campaign polling was showing her with 50 percent of the vote. She has conceded, telling supporters, On this night, we will not cross the river.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A pair of special congressional primaries Tuesday in Ohio could serve as litmus tests for the moods of the Republican and Democratic parties heading into next year’s midterm elections.
After the stinging defeat of one of his endorsed congressional candidates in Texas last week, former President Donald Trump’s sway as a kingmaker among Republicans was tested in central Ohio’s 15th Congressional District, where his candidate won.
He had endorsed coal lobbyist Mike Carey from among a formidable field of 11 GOP primary contenders for the seat vacated by Republican Steve Stivers in May. Stivers had backed one of three sitting lawmakers in the race state Rep. Jeff LaRe for the job.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – County Councilwoman Shontel Brown has held off progressive Nina Turner to win the Democratic primary for an open U.S. House seat in Ohio.
The contest Tuesday had emerged as a proxy for the future of the Democratic Party. Brown had the support of Hillary Clinton, the political arm of the Congressional Black Caucus and several leading unions.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Political newcomer Mike Carey has won the crowded Republican primary for an open U.S. House seat in central Ohio.
The longtime coal lobbyist was backed by former President Donald Trump, who had called Carey a “courageous fighter” who will be tough on crime. Carey has never held public office before.
His main competition for the 15th Congressional District had been first-term state Sen. Jeff LaRe and former state Rep. Ron Hood. The sprawling Republican-leaning district includes all or part of 12 Ohio counties, including Columbus.
