Idaho governor signs property tax relief legislation

Idaho governor signs property tax relief legislation BOISE, Idaho (AP) Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a property tax relief bill Wednesday that opponents describe as deeply flawed but supporters say is better than nothing. The Republican governor expressed his own doubts in approving the legislation that was rushed through in the final days of the legislative session last week with little public participation. The law takes effect immediately, with significant portions retroactive to Jan. 1. “I am signing House Bill 389 because it provides some relief to Idaho taxpayers,” Little wrote in a letter to lawmakers. “However, I fear the long-term consequences may outweigh this temporary reprieve.”

Writers on the Range: Some Western states join the rush to suppress voting

Courtesy photo Colorado’s elections are a bipartisan success story, so when Major League baseball responded to Georgia’s new voting restrictions by moving the All-Star Game to Denver, it couldn’t have made a better choice. More than 76% of eligible Coloradoans voted in 2020 second only to Minnesota in statewide turnout. Every registered voter gets a mail-in ballot weeks ahead of election day, there are convenient and safe drop boxes, and in-person voting is also available. People seem to love the choices. Yet other Rocky Mountain states seem locked in competition to pass the most brazenly anti-democratic election laws. Montana bills would eliminate Election Day voter registration and impose new restrictions on absentee voting. In Wyoming, many lawmakers seek to abolish voting by mail entirely.

Idaho governor signs bill allowing culling of wolves

© Getty Images Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) this week signed a measure that would eliminate most limits on hunting wolves in the state. Under the law, which will take effect in the months ahead, private contractors and hunters in the state will be authorized to kill more than 90 percent of wolves in Idaho. The measure also nearly triples the budget for the state Wolf Depredation Control Board from $110,000 to $300,000. The bill passed the GOP-dominated state legislature largely along party lines. Under a 2002 conservation agreement, the state is required to allow at least 150 wolves and 15 packs to live in the state. The current number of wolves is estimated at around 1,500. Wolves were delisted from the state’s endangered species list in 2011.
