Capitol Police Needs Help To Address Insurrection Failures, Inspector General Says

Updated April 15, 2021 at 4:16 PM ET Updated at 3:55 p.m. Members of Congress heard for the first time on Thursday public testimony from the U.S. Capitol Police inspector general on the most extensive findings yet in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection. The inspector general, Michael Bolton, told a congressional committee in prepared remarks that the agency must pivot from its reactionary role as a police department to one that works in a protection posture to deal with rising threats to the Capitol. My office sees continuing areas in our findings that USCP needs address, Bolton said. Those areas are Intelligence, Training, Operational Planning, and culture change. In regards to culture change, we see that the Department needs to move away from the thought process as a traditional Police Department and move to the posture as a Protective Agency . A Protective Agency is postured to being proactive to prevent events such as January 6th.
