State Rep. Matt Hall to Chair House Tax Policy Committee
State Rep. Matt Hall, of Marshall, has been named chair of the House Tax Policy Committee for the 2021-22 legislative term.
In his first term in the Michigan House, Hall chaired the Oversight Committee and spearheaded the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic - a bipartisan panel of House and Senate legislators tasked with examining the response of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and her administration to COVID-19.
“I look forward to playing a lead role in approving common-sense tax policy reforms that help people and improve our economy,” Hall said. “I’m proud our House Oversight Committee was able to approve meaningful reforms that improved the lives of Michigan residents in a consistent bipartisan fashion. I will strive for the same action while leading the House Tax Policy Committee.”
Michigan Rep. Cynthia Johnson gets committee assignment in new term
Lansing Michigan State Rep. Cynthia Johnson, a Detroit Democrat who was removed from her committee assignments after controversial comments about threats she received, will be back on a committee in the new legislative term.
On Thursday, state House Speaker Jason Wentworth, R-Farwell, released lawmakers assignments for 2021-22. Johnson will be a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
Last term, Johnson was the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, the panel that heard testimony Dec. 2 from President Donald Trump s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. She pushed back on Giuliani s claims and said his witnesses were lying. Afterward, she received death threats from Trump supporters.

LANSING Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday unveiled a $5.6 billion COVID-19 “recovery plan” to expand vaccine distribution, help schools resume in-person instruction and aid businesses and residents across Michigan.
The plan, which relies almost exclusively on federal funding, sets up a potential showdown with Michigan’s Republican-led Legislature, where House Appropriations Chair Thomas Albert has threatened to block spending requests until the governor eases business restrictions and allows restaurants to reopen dining rooms.
In announcing the plan, Whitmer urged cooperation and said the state must act quickly to spend more than $5 billion in new funding from the federal government.
Legislative leaders, however, were not briefed on details of the governor s new proposal before its release.
