Pyrotechnics tariff sparks fireworks between government and opposition

Opposition spokesperson Edwin Vassallo said that government needs to find a solution to the ‘problem’ which he said had been ceated by new tarrifs. In a statement the Opposition politician said that the tarrifs had been imposed on the fireworks security detail and on police presence during the village feast activities. He said that the tarrifs were tolling a death-knell to some of the activities which were now being seen as too expensive to maintain.

Police officer gets frosted for liking minister s birthday cake post

Updated 8.30pm with Police Force s reaction A Facebook post of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and his partner smiling with a football-themed birthday cake led to at least one police officer being summoned before a professional conduct board last month.     Alex Schembri, the president of the Malta Police Association, told Times of Malta that the unnamed officer was summoned before the Professional Standards board and told to expect a written warning.  The unidentified officer is one of around a dozen officers that have faced some form of disciplinary procedure for engaging with politicians on social media in recent months, Schembri said.

CPD acquire rescue/fire fighting dinghy and fire-engine

The Civil Protection Department has procured a large rescue dinghy and an advanced fire-fighting vehicle in a €1m investment from public funds. The department explained that the dinghy is suitable for use in rescue operations of up to 12 hours, even in rough weather. It can also be used for fire-fighting in harbours. The Scorpion fire-fighting truck is seen as ideally suited for fire fighting in industrial zones owing to its 15-metre reach. The new equipment was inspected by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, who renewed the government s commitment to further acquisitions and investment in personnel training.
