SINGAPORE, Dec 16 Human rights lawyer M. Ravi was charged today with criminally defaming Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam in a Facebook post last month.
Ravi had claimed that fellow lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam, who briefly employed Ravi when he was suspended from practising law in 2015, had said Shanmugam “wields influence over Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon.”
In the November 6 Facebook post, he alleged that Thuraisingam had also said Shanmugam “calls the shot and controlls (sic) Sundaresh Menon.”
Lawyer Ravi Madasamy, better known as M. Ravi, was charged in a district court on Wednesday (Dec 16) with criminal defamation.
The 51-year-old Singaporean is accused of defaming Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam in a unit at People’s Park Centre at around 8.45am on Nov 6.

Portugal’s Home Affairs Minister, Eduardo Cabrita, has said today in parliament that Portugal ‘ashamed’ of the murder of Ukrainian citizen Ihor Homeniuk at SEF Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) facilities at Lisbon airport in March. He said what happened “is something that, for a country that is a global reference for the way it receives migrants and welcomes refugees (…) makes us ashamed of this circumstance”. Ukrainian national Ihor Homeniuk died after allegedly being fatally beaten by border patrol officers.

According to court documents, Ravi is said to have intended for the post to harm Mr Shanmugam s reputation.
In a statement on Nov 7, the police said that investigations had been carried out in relation to a Facebook entry that Ravi is accused of posting the day before.

ICAO is unhappy with the government s failure to maintain high standards at the airport. The facilities are run down and in a state of disrepair.
The government has until next year to refurbish the airport to prevent its closure.
