Reps Lou Correa and Peter Meijer introduce legislation to research cannabis as an alternative to opioids for veterans

Congressmen Lou Correa (D-CA) and Peter Meijer (R-MI) reintroduced The VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act of 2021. The bipartisan and bicameral legislation directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to perform clinical research on the safety and efficacy of medical cannabis in treating veterans’ post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain. An identical version of this legislation was introduced by Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester (D-MT) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK). Additionally, the legislation has the support of the House Veterans Affairs Chairman Mark Takano. Rep. Lou Correa said, “With the opioid crisis raging across America, it is imperative to the health and safety of our veterans that we find alternative treatments for chronic pain and service-related injuries. VA reports decrease in number of March appointments scheduled at Ralph H Johnson VAMC health facility in Goose Creek

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, subsidiary 534GD in Goose Creek, South Carolina scheduled 10,885 pending appointments in March compared to 12,008 during the same period last year, according to data collected from the U.S. Department of Veteran s Affairs. Of the total number of appointments this March, 10,790 had a wait time of 30 days or less (99.1%) and 95 appointments (0.9%) were scheduled more than 30 days out. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in January 2019, reported that wait times for new appointments at VA health care facilities were similar or better to wait times at private-sector providers between 2014 and 2017.
