Kanawha County commissioners unanimously came out today against the “Defend the Guard Act,” even before any legislative committee has considered it.

“This bill is misleading – if passed, it will
defund, not defend, the West Virginia National Guard. As in past years, I urge our legislators to soundly reject this legislation,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper, a Democrat, stated today.
He was joined by his fellow commissioners, a Democrat and a Republican.
The bill in the state Legislature would require Congress to make an official declaration of war or an action to call forth the state militia before members of the West Virginia National Guard may be released from state control to participate in active duty combat.
The VA Southern Arizona Health Care System, subsidiary 678GG in Tucson, Arizona scheduled 2,298 pending appointments in August compared to 2,595 the previous month, according to data collected from the U.S. Department of Veteran s Affairs.
Of the total number of appointments, 2,256 had a wait time of 30 days or less (98.2%) and 42 appointments (1.8%) were scheduled more than 30 days out.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in January 2019 reported that wait times for new appointments at VA health care facilities were similar to or better than wait times at private-sector providers between 2014 and 2017.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO), however, released a report in July 2019 that cautioned that the VA s data-tracking system only captures part of the appointment process and fails to account for the time that it takes the VA to enroll veterans in its health benefits program.
