NEPA clout: Legislators get committee assignments in Harrisburg

Luzerne County and Northeast Pennsylvania will have some clout in Harrisburg this legislative session as several legislators have been named to chair committees. Sen. Lisa Baker, R-20, of Lehman Twp., will once again serve as the majority chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her colleague, Sen. John Yudichak, I-14, of Swoyersville, will be the majority chair of the Senate Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee. State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-121, of Wilkes-Barre, will continue as Democratic chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs. State Rep. Michael Carroll, D-118, of Avoca, will remain as Democratic chair of the House Transportation Committee.

Boback to chair veterans affairs in House

Boback was recently sworn into her eighth term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. “I am proud to be part of a team of strong legislative leaders who support our Commonwealth,” Boback said. “It is my honor to have Speaker Cutler’s and my fellow members’ continued trust and support with the chairmanship of this important standing committee.” The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee oversees legislation concerning public safety, emergency planning and preparedness, 911 emergency telephone services, fire and emergency medical services response and training, Pennsylvania National Guard and military/veterans issues, nuclear power plant safety and response programs, flood response and mitigation programs, hazardous material planning and response, emergency communication systems, and homeland security and safety programs and initiatives.

Rep Takano profoundly disappointed with Asian and Pacific representation in Biden Cabinet

Jan 11, 2021 6:02 PM EDT As President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office, House Veterans Affairs Chairman Mark Takano, D-Calif., said he is “profoundly disappointed” with his failure to appoint a person of Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) descent to serve in his Cabinet. Takano made his critical remarks during an interview with the PBS NewsHour about his agenda for the Veterans Affairs Committee in the 117th Congress. He said he is looking forward to the incoming Biden administration, but that his will be the first administration in 20 years not to have an AAPI leading an executive department. “As much as I view myself as a friendly ally of this president, I think he’s erred in [that] he has chosen to exclude Asian Americans from his 15 Cabinet secretaries,” said Takano, who also has a leadership position in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

In the years since she has learned a lot and not just the warning signs, which can vary from person to person, but how the ripple effect hits families and friends.
