U.S. delegation sent to Haiti departs shortly after arrival after gunshots heard at president s funeral July 23, 2021 / 8:15 PM / CBS News How Haiti can move forward A delegation sent to Haiti by President Biden including U.S. ambassador the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield left that country shortly after arriving when gunshots were heard at the funeral for assassinated President Jovenel Moïse, the White House confirmed on Friday. Thomas-Greenfield and other officials said the delegation had returned to the U.S. safely, CBS News Pam Falk confirmed.  White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday afternoon that the presidential delegation is safe and accounted for in light of the reported shootings outside of the funeral. The report of gunshots at Moïse s funeral were first reported by Reuters. 

Shots, tear gas mar Moise funeral in Haiti

CAP-HAITIEN, HAITI — Haiti police fired tear gas as shots rang out Friday moments after the start of the funeral ceremony for slain President Jovenel Moise, who was assassinated two weeks ago. The U.S. delegation to the funeral, headed by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, cut its visit short after the shooting began around 10 a.m. local time. Moments later the United Nations special representative to Haiti, Helen La Lime, left hurriedly with her entourage as well. Moments before the funeral service began, the crowd began shouting “Assassin” as Haiti National Police Chief Leon Charles arrived. They were joined by others yelling, “Where is Jovenel?”
