Former Delaware governor and Congressman Pierre S. (“Pete”) du Pont IV died Saturday, May 8, 2021, at his home in Wilmington after a long illness.
Gov. du Pont served as Delaware’s lone congressman in the 92nd-94th Congresses from 1971-77. He served as Delaware’s 68th governor from 1977 to 1985.
In the U.S. Congress, Gov. du Pont served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee. As a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, he was a co-author and sponsor of the War Powers Act of 1973, which was passed into law and limits the authority of the president to commit U.S. armed forces abroad without the consent of the Congress.
