In an apparent response to growing calls for making U.S. aid to the Netanyahu government conditional on Israeli adherence to human rights law, 330 members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter late last month insisting that the $3.8 billion in annual military aid the United States provides Israel remain unconditional.
The letter â which was signed by virtually all of the Republicans and over half of the Democrats â was a slap in the face to those who have argued that military aid to Israel, like all recipients of taxpayer-funded weaponry, be conditional on at least some level of compliance with human rights and international law.
“And I think that our government has to focus on two huge consequences,” she continued. “One, the potential collapse of the Afghan government and a takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, probably with a resumption of civil war in certain parts of the country, but a largely Taliban-run government at some point in the not-too-distant future.
“How do we help and protect the many, many thousands of Afghans who worked with the United States and NATO, who worked with American and other NATO-connected contractors, who stood up and spoke out for women’s rights and human rights?” she asked. “I hope that the administration, in concert with the Congress, will have a very large visa program and will begin immediately to try to provide that channel for so many Afghans to utilize so that they are not left in danger. When interventionists and national security deep state hawks need to prolong what s already the longest war in in US history, who re they gonna call?. Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice told members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee they re worried about President Biden s plan to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, with Rice suggesting the US may need to go back,
The pair s expert testimony was given over Zoom and appears to have been kept relatively quiet, given it was a closed door members only call, until Axios learned of it.
Rice of course infamously served as George Bush s National Security Advisor during the initial invasions of both Afghanistan and Iraq, and crucially helped make the case for war to the American public, later serving as Bush s Secretary of State through 2009.
