Ghana s census refuseniks , no laughing matter!

Graphic Online Date: Jul - 03 - 2021 , 10:01 BY: By Ajoa Yeboah-Afari 705 On the face of it, the idea that anybody would demand payment before they agree to be counted in the ongoing, twin enumeration, the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), is quite amusing. It is the sort of anecdote that generates a smile or laughter. But, on reflection, is it really humorous? Is such a demand rather not cause for serious disquiet, as it implies a state of worrying ignorance or recalcitrance – or both? I recall that in my school days, we used to have an expression, ‘volu-compor’ (short for voluntary-compulsory), coined to describe a situation where a directive was supposed to be voluntary, yet failure to comply would result in punishment.

I count - proudly waiting to be counted

705 At the hairdresser’s salon last Monday, I overheard a conversation on the much awaited Census Night which happened the previous night, June 27, 2021. The conversation was on the back of a lead story on the 12 noon Akan news of a local FM station. The story was on the Census Night counting the night before in some hotels, hospitals and some make-shift structures in Accra. Myths, misunderstanding As usual, wrong information, myths and misunderstanding clouded their discussion as one lady vigorously visited her gross misinformation and ignorance of the process on the others. Her point was that at the pre-census visits, the officers were asking people how many television sets they had in their homes.

Enumerators begin census in Ga Central - key activities herald night

705 Enumerators in the Ghana Central Municipal Assembly (GCMA) begun the census exercise within the municipality last Monday. This comes a day after enumerators visited different places in the area to begin counting of people. Last Sunday, enumerators together with brass band and spinners went on a float in communities including Ablekuma, Anyaa, Sowutuom, Awoshie, Santa Maria, Mambo, and Olebu to begin the begin the exercise. There were other activities including the lighting of bon fires, tolling of church bells, and Azan from mosques to remind people of the impending census and the need to participate. The enumerators in the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) visited various places to count people in homeless households in makeshift structures and open spaces, described as “outside sleepers”, people who were in transit, those at transport terminals, those who were spending short stays in institutions such as hotels and guest houses and hospitals.
