Though West Virginia saw a red county Tuesday on the state’s COVID-19 alert map, most of the state and most of the Northern Panhandle remained in the map’s safest category.
Three of the four Northern Panhandle counties were among the 32 in the state that were green on the Department of Health and Human Resources alert map. Hardy County went red on Tuesday’s map, sitting in the map’s highest-risk category. Eight more counties were orange, eight were gold and six were yellow.
Hancock County had an infection rate of 3.47 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 0.96 on Tuesday’s map. Brooke County had an infection rate of 3.91 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 0.76.

As West Virginia begins the one-year mark today from when Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of emergency for the COVID-19 pandemic, an analysis of data shows that decreases in cases are continuing at a slower rate.
According to data from the Department of Health and Human Resources, the number of positive cases over a 14-day period between March 1 and March 14 was 3,827, which was a 7 percent decrease compared to 4,104 cases between Feb. 15 through Feb. 28.
