Easton woman to stand trial in May for 2019 double-fatal crash

FALL RIVER   An Easton woman charged with causing a high-speed collision that claimed the lives of an elderly East Bridgewater couple in 2019 is scheduled to stand trial next month. At a trial assignment conference hearing last week, a jury-waived trial date was set for May 24. A final pretrial conference is scheduled first on May 7 to ensure the case is ready to proceed to trial. Vazquez and her attorney, Jason Maloney, have requested a bench trial before a judge rather than a jury. Vazquez was set to go to trial on at least three other occasions since December, but was rescheduled each time due to COVID-19 safety concerns on one occasion and at the request of both the defense and prosecution on another.

The Herald News FALL RIVER A 34-year-old Fall River man arrested last month while on probation related to a 2015 conviction for robbing and kidnapping a 79-year-old woman in Fall River was sentenced to serve an additional two years in state prison for violating his probation, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced. Matthew Rocha, who was also on probation out of Rhode Island, was arrested by Fall River Police on March 1 after a Feb. 28 incident involving his girlfriend. According to a press release, on Feb. 28, the victim called her friend in North Carolina in hysterics, stating that the defendant choked her and messed up her face.  She described injuries to her face and informed her friend that she was calling from inside her truck. She also told her friend that the defendant begged her not to call the police. The friend contracted Fall River Police and relayed all the victim had told her, including the victim s exact location.

Superior Court Judge Thomas Perrino sentenced 33-year old Felix Cortes to five to seven years in state prison. Prosecutors say the incident happened in Fall River on November 7, 2019. Prosecutors say the defendant and his co-defendant broke into the victim s apartment on Division Street in Fall River at 9:30 a.m. by kicking in the door. The defendant was wearing a mask over his face. The door was splintered and cracked, and the drywall from the wall was all over the floor.

(AP) A Massachusetts woman charged with fatally stabbing another woman during a fight over drugs and money has been indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge, according to court documents made public Monday. Kayla Cantu, 20, of Weymouth is charged with fatally stabbing Kimberly Duphily outside an apartment in Attleboro on Sept. 11, The Sun Chronicle reported. The indictment, handed up April 1, transfers the case from district court to Fall River Superior Court. No arraignment has been scheduled. Cantu remains held without bail after pleading not guilty at her district court arraignment in November.
