NEW BEDFORD The portrait of retired presiding New Bedford District Court Judge Bernadette L. Sabra now hangs in the courthouse.
But it did seem at times as if the ceremony to honor the judge, held earlier this month in the main courtroom, might never be held because of the pandemic.
The portrait, which was done by Cantin Photography of Tiverton, Rhode Island, was finished late last year and remained in the judge’s home for about six months until it was safe to hold the ceremony.
Sabra joked that the thought of coming into court in the middle of the night and hanging the portrait herself even crossed her mind.
FALL RIVER An 18-year-old accused of gunning down two people last week in a neighborhood park in the Corky Row section of the city has been charged with first degree murder.
At his arraignment Thursday afternoon in Fall River District Court, Jeremy Holmes was also charged with one count of assault and battery by means of discharge of a firearm.
On May 17, Holmes is alleged to have shot Miguel Sanjurjo, 14, and Jovaughn Antonio Mills, 29, to death in Griffin Park at about 4 p.m. A third victim, a 19-year-old man, not identified by law enforcement, was shot in the leg and is expected to recover.
Fall River Shooting Suspect Now Charged With Murder
Charges against an 18-year-old Fall River man already in custody in connection to last Tuesday s double homicide in Fall River have been upgraded to murder.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office says a new criminal complaint charging Jeremy Holmes with two counts of murder and one count of assault and battery by means of a firearm was filed in Fall River District Court late this morning.
Holmes still also faces charges of carrying an illegal firearm, carrying a loaded illegal firearm, and unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm.
