Saptak festival: Where only music mattered

The Saptak festival stood out for its formidable line-up of artistes from across the globe The world’s longest Hindustani music festival, Saptak, bravely went online last week. Featuring 34 concerts, spread over 13 days, the festival stood out for its laidback approach to the visuals. Unlike other festivals which insisted on uniformity and standardisation of presentation, down to the backdrop, quality levels of recording and sound, Saptak was remarkable in its “hands-off” decentralised broadcasts. Adding charm and an old-fashioned quaintness, one realised that to hear good music, one doesn’t really need the fancy settings and close-up shots. Founder of Saptak, sitarist Manju Mehta, said that the emphasis was only on the music.

Karnataka: Mild lathicharge in Raichur as civic officials evict illegal residential plot encroachers | Hubballi News

RAICHUR: Tension prevailed in Raichur after municipal officials razed houses built on illegally encroached plots at old Ashraya colony in the outskirts of the city. The police had to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the occupants who were protesting against the eviction. The plots were allotted several years back to the beneficiaries by the Raichur City Municipal Council (RCMC). Later it was found that some houses were not built by original beneficiaries but by encroachers. Following a complaint on the same the deputy commissioner (DC) ordered eviction. The Ashraya colony is located near Chandrabanda road and the survey number of the plot is 570/572. According to the CMC about 70 houses are illegally built.

BENGALURU: Six habitual offenders with past records of breaking into locked houses became friends during their prison days. After walking out on bail, they joined hands and burgled five houses in the city, Mulbagal and Hassan before landing in police custody. Rajgopalnagar police recovered stolen property worth Rs 30 lakh from the arrested suspects Kenchappa alias Krishna, 34, of Doddaballapura, Harish Kumar, 27, and Naveen Kumar, 31, of Laggere, Mohammed Ibrahim alias Sohail, 36, of Doddaballapura and a native of Mumbai, Venkatesh Kumar, 34, of Ramamurthynagar and James, 35, of Hennur Cross. DCP (north) Dharmender Kumar Meena said Kenchappa alias Krishna was the kingpin, who assembled the gang. Kenchappa s records show he is in field since 2012. He was arrested in at least eight burglary cases reported in rural Karnataka. Similarly, Harish is also an old offender and charged in dacoity, attempt-to-murder and temple theft cases.
