In a statement Nelson City Council said items from the park’s collection were being investigated for picric acid. “Picric acid was widely used in early forms of medicine and medical supplies, including on gauze pads, and as an antiseptic. It is a volatile substance sensitive to heat, frictions and shock and has been used as a military explosive. “Any items considered hazardous will be removed for safe disposal off site.”

The Defence Force has evacuated a Nelson childcare centre and a marae in order to search a local heritage building for explosive material. The Nelson City Council says the Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit is searching the Founders Heritage Park s collection of historical items for picric acid - a volatile substance used in early medical supplies, that can also be used as a military explosive. It is sensitive to heat, friction and shock so will therefore need to be removed from the suite and safely disposed of, if it is found.
