MacDill ceremony honors long-lost African American cemetery
Jennifer Holton reports
TAMPA, Fla. - Like the words of Amazing Grace, souls unknown for decades can now rest.
Tuesday morning, MacDill Air Force Base hosted a memorial service for the lost Port Tampa Cemetery, burial grounds of African American citizens that were essentially forgotten when the base was opened back in 1941.
Port Tampa, established in the 1880s, connected the railroad to the sea and was home to a diverse group of Americans. Segregation, however, was still flourishing. Segregation’s grip on society was so tight, that it followed those buried here to the grave, said Col. Benjamin Jonsson, MacDill’s base commander.

TAMPA, Fla. â The military community continues to remember the impact Vincent Jackson left through his work.
Steve and Cheryl Sitton remember how he touched their lives.
âIt was not anything to do with PR for himself or anything,â said Steve.
âHe was just a very loving person,â said Steve of his son.
They said that year, Jackson honored him. The Sittons were invited to tour One Buc Place, meet Jackson and watch a Buccaneers game.
âIt was very special. I mean we love the Bucs, but then to have him of all the players, to have this kind of an organization and to reach out to us. Weâre just a mom and dad and for him to reach out to us in honor of our son it was really special,â said Cheryl.
