About 10,000 COVID vaccine shots were administered in a week in Ventura County with a total of nearly 30,000 doses expected to have arrived in the region by New Year s.
The first of two doses has been given to health care workers at eight acute care hospitals across the county, officials said. Ventura County hospitals flooded with COVID-19 admissions could see the surge more than double within a month to an alarming 700-plus patients who need care, according to California state projections.
That leap could overburden the health care system, according to county officials and some hospital leaders. There should be a public alarm right now as to how the health care system will keep up with this, said Dr. John Fankhauser, CEO of Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital. We are on the trajectory to completely overwhelm the system.
The numbers change daily. As of Thursday, Ventura County s hospitalizations were projected to rise to 737 COVID patients receiving care as of Jan. 23.
If Christmas looks too much like Thanksgiving, public health officials predict bad things could happen. Then we re going to see this surge continue and get even worse, said Ventura County Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin, referring to gatherings that brought together family and friends from different households for turkey and fellowship.
County residents should spend the holidays at home with only the people in their households, according to Levin and many other health leaders. They worry about feeding a growing COVID surge that is filling Ventura County hospitals and testing ICU capacity.
People should avoid even the family gatherings carefully designed as safe events with plans for social distancing, masks and outdoor meals, said Levin.
