VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - The Ventura County District Attorney s Office announced that their review into the circumstances surrounding the 2018 Borderline Bar & Grill shooting has been completed.
DA Gregory Totten said the investigation revealed that shots fired by Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ronald Helus and California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Barrett during the event were justified.
In a video message, Totten explained that whenever an officer-involved shooting results in death or serious injury, it is investigated thoroughly by the DA to determine if the officer violated the law when he acted.
The DA s Office ultimately concluded that no responding officers committed any crimes during the incident.

The report, which found both officers acted lawfully when they fired their weapons, also includes video which shows Ventura County Sheriff s Sgt. Ron Helus returning fire even after being shot in the heart.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has concluded their investigation of the Borderline Bar & Grill mass shooting.
The DA’s report found that Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ronald Helus and California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Barrett acted reasonably, and their use of deadly force in self-defense and in the defense of others was justified.
The DA’s office has released new security video of the shooting that was part of an extensive investigation.
On the night of Nov. 7, 2018 two California Highway Patrol officers made their way to the Borderline Bar & Grill after receiving calls of shots fired from inside. They arrived on scene followed by Sgt. Helus.

A police officer who responded and was killed at a California bar chaos on Nov. 7, 2018, was also shot by his fellow officer according to the latest reports. Ventura County Sheriff Ron Helus was firing at main suspect Ian David Long at that time but tripped on some entangled ropes as he was backing out.
Helus was exchanging fire with Long inside the dark, smoky bar at the time before tumbling to the ground according to a report from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Another police officer, Todd Barrett had already exited the premises at that point but was still firing at Long. One of his shots unfortunately hit Helus as he was getting back to his feet.
