Murder charges dropped against Oxnard man after 11 years behind bars VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - An Oxnard man who claims he was wrongfully convicted of attempted murder more than a decade ago appeared in court on Monday for a life-changing ruling. The day ended in tears as 32-year-old Ignacio Ixta Jr. learned he was being released from jail. Ixta was convicted by a jury trial in 2010 for attempted murder and related felonies in connection to a December 2009 shooting. However in 2020, the Ventura County District Attorney s Conviction Integrity Unit learned that four search warrants involving one of the prosecution’s key witnesses had not been provided to their office with Ixta’s case materials.

Oxnard man pleads guilty to fatal October stabbing

Oxnard man pleads guilty to fatal October stabbing The suspect in a fatal Oxnard stabbing last October pleaded guilty to the charges on Wednesday, according to the Ventura County District Attorney s Office. Cody Washington, 44, of Oxnard, entered a guilty plea to one count of voluntary manslaughter, as well as admitted he personally used a knife during the commission of the crime.  The stabbing occurred around 10:37 a.m. on Oct. 24, 2020, at a shopping center in the 3700 block of Saviers Road.  Officers arrived on scene to find the victim, identified as Corey Smith, 25, of Oxnard, lying on the ground unresponsive with a stab wound in his chest. He was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
