A possible tornado swept through the Washington D.C., area Thursday night, passing through the National Mall and disrupting flights at Reagan National Airport.
Forecasters were still trying to determine if the wind damage that occurred in Virginia, the district and Maryland was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning until 9:30 p.m. local time, and said about ten minutes after the warning had expired that the worst of the storms had passed. If you are in Arlington, DC, or nearby in the greater metro area: use extreme caution if out and about tonight, the weather service said on Twitter. There are likely lots of hanging branches and leaning trees from earlier storms which may fall overnight. Avoid wooded areas, downed wires, and flooded or closed roads.

Weather conditions may be a bit different this June compared to June 2020 in some areas of the Lower 48, but that may not be the case in all regions.
Looking back to last June, the dominant upper-level pattern during the month was a ridge of high pressure, or northward bulge of the jet stream, over the central United States with southward dips in the jet stream, or troughs, over both the East and West coasts.
The weather pattern will likely be different this year, including the location of the upper-level ridge of high pressure. This will result in some differences in the weather.

Tracking the tropics as hurricane season officially begins.
Welcome to Hurricane Season 2021! Fortunately, Mother Nature is playing a different hand this year compared to last.
On June 1, 2020, the third tropical depression of the season had already developed. It turned into Tropical Storm Cristobal the following morning.
This year, strong upper-level winds are blowing across the Gulf, Caribbean and tropical Atlantic Ocean. As long as that flow keeps up, any tropical disturbances that think about developing will get blasted and fall apart.
In the middle of the atmosphere, dust from Africa is already covering the eastern tropical Atlantic. That will tend to dry out any systems that want to get going.
