AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL investigation will take place around Weymouth s former council offices after residents voiced concerns that historical gems could be lost forever when the site is transformed into luxury housing. Dorset Council has received comments from a number of local residents expressing concerns about the historical importance of North Quay after it was announced the former council offices would be demolished and turned into homes.
Proposed luxury homes at North Quay Picture: Dorset Council The site was a location of action during the Battle of Weymouth in the Civil War in 1645 and, although it is unclear if any archaeological evidence remains as the site has been built on many times over the intervening centuries, it is still possible some findings of archaeological interest might still be there.
WEYMOUTH residents are being urged to share their views on two major new developments before it is too late. As reported, Dorset Council has revealed proposals for the former borough council offices at North Quay to be demolished to make way for a luxury 72-home complex. Meanwhile a proposal has also been unveiled for around 59 flats to be built at the site of the former bowling alley in Weymouth town centre.
What s being proposed? The plans would see a total of around 131 new homes being built across the two brownfield sites. There would be no affordable housing at the luxury North Quay complex but the council is planning for affordable homes to be built at the bowling alley site.
