Like Massachusetts on Friday, Governor Phil Scott says Vermont’s outdoor mask-wearing requirement will end Saturday.
Republican Governor Phil Scott said Friday in line with the new CDC guidelines effective May 1st, Vermonters will not be required to wear masks when outside if physical distancing is maintained.
“This includes both those who are vaccinated or not vaccinated as yet, Scott said. The science and data show that outdoor transmission is rare and imposes little risk if you follow our guidance. I do want to mention that municipalities and businesses do have the ability to have stricter policies if they so choose.”

Vermont eases outdoor mask requirements, moves to Step 2 of Vermont Forward Plan
Governor Phil Scott announced today that as of May 1, masks will only be required outdoors in situations where a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained.
Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD, said this change is based on science that shows the risk of transmission when outdoors is very small.
“This is why, now when you’re outdoors, masks will only be required when you’re in a crowd or with multiple households, where you can’t keep a 6-foot distance from others,” Dr. Levine said. “This is regardless of whether you are vaccinated or not.”
CDC issues new mask guidance
Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD, acknowledged Tuesday new guidance issued from the CDC regarding wearing masks outdoors for fully vaccinated people.
“The new mask guidance is a common-sense public health step,” said Dr. Levine. “The CDC, like the State of Vermont, is taking well-modulated, science-based steps in developing its recommendations. It strikes the right balance for this point in the nation’s pandemic response – allowing greater flexibility connected with vaccination status.”
Dr. Levine said the Governor and the state’s Restart team have already been considering changes to Vermont’s guidance, and will review the CDC’s recommendations in the context of the Vermont Forward Plan, the pace of vaccination, and progress being made managing the COVID-19 pandemic in Vermont.
