KRISHNAMOORTHY Two liver transplants performed on critically ill patients during pandemic The Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute in Madurai has successfully performed 113 transplants, including kidney and liver, over the last three years, according to its chairman M.V. Muthuramalingam. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said recognition from the State government in the form of ‘best transplant centre award consecutively for three years came as a motivation to the team of surgeons, physicians and medicos at the hospital.

Shortage of COVID-19 vaccines causes concern

Madurai A shortage of COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in a number of hospitals and health facilities across Madurai district. The data obtained from the Health department shows that till date 2,22,300 doses of vaccine has been received by Madurai district 1,98,400 doses of Covishield and 23,900 doses of Covaxin. A total of 1,84,898 persons have been administered COVID-19 vaccination in the district until April 19. The data shows that the first batch of Covishield vaccines were received by Madurai district on January 15. Since then, the district has been receiving varying quantities of Covishield vaccines at different intervals and the last batch was received on April 15.

Hospitals gearing up to treat rising COVID-19 cases

Updated: Share Article AAA With the rising new COVID-19 positive cases, the government and private hospitals in the district are gearing up to handle the additional number of cases. Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) Dean J. Sangumani said that health infrastructure in the hospital has been geared up to handle the rising number of cases. Medical Superintendent M. Balasubramaniam said that there are a total of 1,561 beds to treat COVID-19 patients in the COVID-19 speciality wing of the GRH, Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine at Thoppur, and old OG block of GRH. Currently, non-COVID-19 cases are routinely treated at the hospital. ‘We will postpone the elective surgeries only if there is a sudden spike in cases,’ he said.

A release from the hospital said arrangements were made with the help of the police to ensure swift transport of the organ from Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (VMCHRI) to Madurai airport and from the city airport to RIMC.
