A first look at the full Transmission Gully road, due to open in September 2021. (First published in November 2020)
Transmission Gully will, fingers crossed, open this year, providing much-needed relief for traffic in and out of the capital, which ground to a near-standstill daily in the final week of 2020. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has put out congestion warnings on State Highway 1 between Peka Peka and Ōtaki almost every day of the Christmas/New Year period. While Wellingtonians have waited year after year for Transmission Gully to be built, lawyers have lined their pockets with $1.7 million worth of taxpayer money.
The 27-kilometre motorway is behind schedule and will now cost $1.25 billion after massive budget blowouts.
The road is being built through a public-private partnership (PPP), the Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP), with CPB Contractors and HEB Construction sub-contracted to carry out the design and construction.
