HCC Students Going Pro In Manufacturing

Apr 26, 2021 HUNTINGTON The Robert C. Byrd Institute at Marshall University has scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students as part of its effort to expand opportunity, build a more diverse workforce and help bridge the manufacturing skills gap. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Hearst Foundations, rural low-income, female and minority students enrolled in the Machinist Technology/CNC and Welding Technology programs are eligible for scholarships for career skills classes that are offered in collaboration with Mountwest Community and Technical College. The institute has trained nearly 750 individuals, delivering hands-on learning and intensive interaction with instructors that has resulted in students earning more than 2,500 national industry certifications from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills and American Welding Society. In 2019, the entire Machinist Technology/CNC senior class boasted job offers prior to graduation.

GNBVT Students Donate Thousands to the Be Like Brit Foundation Last year was an extremely hard year for everyone. Some were more fortunate than others and decided to use their blessings to help those less fortunate in 2020. Ten students from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School exemplified the good that comes from making lemonade out of lemons. According to a recent press release, the “Be Like Brit Foundation was established by Cherylann and Len Gengel to honor the life of their daughter, Britney Gengel who died tragically in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti along with approximately 300,000 others.” Within two years, a home in Britney’s name was built to care for the children of Grand-Goâve, Haiti.

SFCTC Students Create Children’s Books For Area Schools High school seniors enrolled in the Graphic Design program at the State Fair Career and Technology Center (SFCTC) on the State Fair Community College (SFCC) Sedalia campus used their imaginations and graphic design skills to create children’s books for area elementary school libraries.  “The seniors were asked to create a children’s book to showcase their skills using professional Adobe design software,” said Linda Harris, SFCTC Graphic Design instructor. “They have been working hard to develop their skills in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. This project also allowed them to apply their knowledge of preparing files for printing and bindery.
