Andhra Endowments Minister celebrates Bhogi with family ANI | Updated: Jan 13, 2021 12:14 IST Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], January 13 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Endowments MinisterVellampalli Srinivasa Rao celebrated Bhogi festival with his family members at his residence in Vijayawada on Wednesday. Rao tossed old objects into a large bonfire. A colourful rangoli was decorated on the floor next to the bonfire. The minister wished everyone a happy and prosperous Bhogi. Largely celebrated in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Bhogi marks the beginning of the four-day Pongal festival, in which old, used household articles are put in a bonfire. Bhogi is celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti.

Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh) [India], January 7 (ANI): Heavy police deployment was made at Ramatheertham in Andhra Pradesh s Vizianagaram district on Thursday to quell possible protests in connection with the desecration of idols in the state. Over the last few days, several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including General Secretary P Vishnuvardhan Reddy, party president Somu Veerraj, Nagothu Ramesh, Bhanuprakash Reddy and Member of Parliament GVL Narasimha Rao were detained by the police while they were protesting. On Monday, state Endowments Minister Vellampalli Srinivasa Rao had urged BJP leaders to withdraw their proposed rally at Ramateertham as an investigation was underway to look into the incident and announced that a new idol would be installed there.

BJP worker attempts self-immolation in Vizianagaram during protest over Ram idol desecration ANI | Updated: Jan 06, 2021 23:01 IST Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh) [India], January 6 (ANI): A local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker attempted self-immolation on Wednesday during a protest outside the Vizianagaram district collector s office. The protest was held against the arrest of state BJP president Somu Veerraju and other leaders who were undertaking a Dharma Yatra on Tuesday against the vandalisation of Lord Rama idol last week by unknown miscreants. The police rescued the worker, Abdul Adil, who had poured petrol over himself and shifted him to a hospital. Slogans were raised at the protest against the state Endowment Minister Vellampalli Srinivas.
