Herts County Council data shows flytipping increase in Herts

“Where we currently stand we are about 54 per cent up on the same period last year. “And as a result 2021 will be highest level of fly-tipping on record since 2012, which is really disappointing given that in 2019  we had he second lowest annual total  reported for the Partnership. “It’s a situation that’s replicated in other parts of the country, but there are others that have seen an overall reduction during the pandemic.” According to the data more than 40 per cent of the fly-tipping incidents reported this year have been in Welwyn Hatfield or in Stevenage. The monthly average of fly-tipping incidents in Welwyn Hatfield so far this year (2020/21) is 387, according to the data.

Welwyn Hatfield leader releases statement on COVID-19 deaths

Welwyn Hatfield leader Cllr Tony Kingsbury - Credit: WHBC As the UK marked the terrible milestone of 100,000 lives lost to coronavirus this week, the leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has released a statement on the loss.  Cllr Tony Kingsbury said: We, in turn, mourn the tragic loss of 161 lives in Welwyn Hatfield. That’s one person every other day since last March. Parents, partners, siblings, friends, colleagues, neighbours; the loss of these people impacting thousands more lives. So many of you are living with the pain of loss and denied the chance to properly say goodbye. So many of you have seen loved ones fall victim to this deadly virus.

Peartree residents petition against building becoming hostel

A sign protesting the hostel that has plans to be turned into a hostel. - Credit: supplied More than 20 households in the Peartree Lane area, Welwyn Garden City, signed a petition against Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council turning a house into a hostel for ‘people with low needs’. Residents from 24 households say that the council, after buying the property, did not inform them of the proposals, only sending a few nearby houses a letter about a ground floor extension. Peartree Lane already hosts a hostel, which a resident claims is a source of constant antisocial behaviour and drug dealing . The resident told this paper: The last thing we want is another hostel.

Holocaust Memorial Day in Welwyn Garden City: Wim van Leer

Holocaust Memorial in Germany - Credit: Pixabay Just before the outbreak of World War II, a factory owner travelled to Germany to bring back Jewish refugees to live in Welwyn Garden City. Wim van Leer, owner of General Stampers ltd, returned to our town on January 15, 1939 from Leipzig after negotiating with the Gestapo to free 14 young people, many from the concentration camps.  The Dutch engineer van Leer went by himself to the German town, shortly before Kristallnacht in November 1938, and was supported in his efforts by a committee of Welwyn Garden City locals.  The Society of Friends was formed by one of the founders of Welwyn Garden City Captain Richard Reiss, a Liberal then Labour MP, student Edgar Reissner who was at King’s College, London and Quaker Geoffrey Edwards. 

Dozens of fines in Welwyn Hatfield for COVID rule breakers

Between July 1 2020 and January 6 2021, there were 47 fixed penalty notices handed out in Welwyn Hatfield to people who broke the rules, compared to only seven in Stevenage and three in St Albans. Fixed penalty notices (FPNs) can be awarded by police if you have broken lockdown rules. In England, fines start at £200, though with cases such as ones involving large parties the police can issue fines of up to £10,000 to the organiser.
