SAN Miguel and the sun spurred a Newtown man to kick a police officer in the chest after he was seen “going mad” at officers and local residents. Sean Gareth Jones was initially seen by police “walking in a determined manner” with no shoes on towards the Maesyrhandir area of Newtown on the evening of April 22. Jones became abusive and aggressive towards officers and was seen shouting at a woman over a garden fence during the incident before he was arrested, kicking PC Bufton in the chest as he was being put in a police van. Welshpool Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday, May 11, that the 29-year-old couldn’t remember the incident or how he got cuts on his arms, legs and back.
Dyfed-Powys Police A MEMBER of a paedophile hunters’ group posed as a fictitious teenage girl to ensnare a Powys man. Darrell Swain was confronted by members of the group in Newtown in June last year and was subsequently arrested by police. The 54-year-old had travelled from his home in Ystradgynlais to Montgomeryshire to meet who he believed to be the 14-year-old girl he had been messaging between May 19 and June 1, 2020. Appearing at Welshpool Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 27, Swain, of Ael-y-Bryn, Ystradgynlais, admitted a charge of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. Magistrates declined jurisdiction in the case and committed Swain to Mold Crown Court for sentence next month.
A NEWTOWN man is to appear in court next week after he was arrested for allegedly carrying out an “inappropriate act with a mannequin”. Dyfed Powys Police confirmed they were called to the Back Lane area of Newtown shortly before 5pm on Monday, April 19, and subsequently arrested 54-year-old David Huw Griffiths for a public order offence. He was charged with using threatening, abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and will appear at Welshpool Magistrates Court next Tuesday, May 4. A spokesperson for the force said: “Dyfed Powys Police received a report at approximately 4.50pm on Monday, April 19, of a man carrying out what was described as an inappropriate act with a mannequin in Back Lane, Newtown.
A former Hereford United footballer has been banned from the roads A FORMER professional footballer, who had a spell at Hereford United, has been banned from the roads after being caught drug driving in Mid-Wales. Andrew Cornelius De Bont, 47, of Townsend Avenue, Sedgley, Dudley, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court, De Bont, who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Wolves, Hartlepool United, and Hereford United in the 1990s, was driving his Vauxhall Astra van on the A483 in Newtown when he was stopped by police on October 22 last year. Helen Tench, prosecuting, said De Bont was stopped on suspicion of being under the influence of an illegal substance, and when tested for cocaine was found to have 100 micrograms in his blood. The legal limit is 30.
A WELSHPOOL teenager has avoided prison after committing theft just two weeks after receiving a suspended jail sentence in the crown court. Charles Douglas John Ashley stole a security camera set up outside a remote property near Llangyniew on September 13 last year, as he was afraid he would be caught on tape. The 19-year-old committed the offence just 17 days after he receiving a six-month custodial sentence for dangerous driving. He admitted theft when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court in February, and his case was sent to Mold Crown Court for sentencing on Friday, March 12. Judge David Hale said he would spare Ashley an immediate prison sentence, but revoked the original six-month term handed down in September and instead extended the suspension period.
