MILWAUKEE â When the Safer at home order first came along, attention turned to those dealing with domestic violence. Isolation brought on by the pandemic was a big concern. It still is.
About a year into the pandemic, TMJ4 News followed up with Sojourner s Family Peace Center. I would say things have not gotten better. They ve been consistently hard throughout the pandemic, said Carmen Pitre, CEO of Sojourner Family Peace Center. The crisis of violence in our homes and in relationships in Milwaukee is still raging and going strong, Pitre continued.
Pitre said even before COVID-19, some stayed in an abusive home for financial reasons, but the pandemic has inflamed that feeling of being trapped.

A leaked police interview set off more than a year of public infighting in Milwaukee, rooted in relationships and controversies going back years. The man police questioned, Kalan Haywood Sr., has repeatedly denied sexual assault allegations and has not been arrested or charged.
November 4, 2014: After losing consciousness during a date, a woman identified publicly only as Jane Doe believes the man she’s been seeing, Haywood, drugged her drink and assaulted her.
December 15, 2015: Carmen Pitre, executive director of Sojourner Family Peace Center, and Edward Flynn, then Milwaukee police chief, sign a “memorandum of understanding” that says suspects will never be interviewed at Sojourner.
