The inaugural event on May 6, 8-9 PM EDT, will feature leading Greek and Iraqi musicians, and Dr. Ali Al Mayahi, Iraq’s Cultural Attaché to the USA. The event dedicated to Greek, Sephardic, and Iraqi music will be the first-ever occasion for an Iraqi government representative to participate in a Jewish-themed event. The event comes ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Farhud (a Nazi-inspired pogrom in Baghdad that brought to an end over two millennia of vibrant Jewish life in Iraq), observed each June 1 as a UN-designated International Farhud Day.

Iraq seeks Italian refund for military purchases

ROME: Iraq has asked Italy to return the €90 million ($108.53 million) Saddam Hussein’s regime paid to Italian companies to purchase military equipment that was never delivered because of the 1991 embargo on the sale of arms to Iraq. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio in Rome on Wednesday and explained the money was paid to Italian aerospace and defense company Leonardo and the Fincantieri shipyard. “There are 60 million euros frozen in Italian banks, plus interest, and 30 million more in current accounts of the embassy and other employees. It is our right to recover that amount, and we have no intention of giving up on this,” Hussein told press after the meeting.

Iranian FM arrives in Iraq on official visit

DUBAI: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has arrived in Iraq on Monday as part of an official visit to discuss relations between both countries. During a joint press conference, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stressed that it is in Iraq s interest to work with Iran to achieve stability in the region.  Hussein noted that some problems are being faced in the economic relations between Iran and Iraq that they hope to solve.  Meanwhile, Zarif said Iran supports a stronger role for Iraq in bringing stability to the region.  He also mentioned the Vienna negotiations, saying: We have not contacted the American negotiators in Vienna, but the nuclear talks are progressing.
