RAMALLAH, Monday, April 19, 2021 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh today denounced Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories, Israeli government-backed intrusions by Jewish fanatics into Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Israeli obstruction of conducting Palestinian elections in occupied East Jerusalem.
Speaking at the opening of the weekly Palestinian cabinet meeting held in Ramallah, Prime Minister Shtayyeh demanded that the US administration act quickly and forcefully to curb the Israeli settlement expansion, which includes plans to establish more than 12,000 settlement units in the West Bank, including 540 units in Jabal Abu Ghneim, south of Jerusalem.

RAMALLAH, Monday, April 19, 2021 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their issue published today last night’s meeting of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which focused on the upcoming legislative elections planned for May 22.
The main front-page headline on this topic in al-Hayat al-Jadida, which dedicated the top half of its page to this meeting, quoted President Mahmoud Abbas, who chaired the meeting, saying; “We are determined to hold the elections on scheduled in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.”

President Abbas may cancel the election if East Jerusalemites cannot participate, but some see this as an excuse by a leader who wishes to avoid the verdict of voters
Despite the issuance of a presidential decree in January to hold legislative and presidential elections, and the setting of dates for them, talk is heating up that elections may be postponed after all.
Al-Quds newspaper, printed in East Jerusalem, reported that a US source believed President Joe Biden would not object to postponing the elections.
The source told the Palestinian paper that the US “views positively the participation of the Palestinians in the political process,” adding, “We are also aware of the special challenges facing the Palestinians, such as the coronavirus pandemic crisis and a stifling economic crisis, in addition to the complexities of the political scene.”
