G7 foreign ministers hold pandemic talks amid COVID scare
India s foreign minister had to pull out of G7 talks after he was possibly exposed to the coronavirus. The pandemic was high on the list as G7 foreign ministers continued with their first face-to-face meeting in years.
The leaders came together to come up with a plan to spread COVID19 vaccinations around the world
G7 talks in London on beating the coronavirus pandemic were overshadowed on Wednesday as India s foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, went into self-isolation amid fears he had come into contact with possible COVID-19 cases. As a measure of abundant caution and also out of consideration for others, I decided to conduct my engagements in the virtual mode. That will be the case with the G7 meeting today as well, Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.
Japan foreign minister voices grave concerns over China at G-7 meeting
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday voiced grave concerns over China s unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China seas on the second day of a meeting of the Group of Seven foreign ministers, the Japanese government said.
As the ministers discussed issues related to China and Russia, Motegi said during the meeting that Japan is also concerned about Beijing s handling of human rights in connection with the Muslim Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang autonomous region as well as the situation in Hong Kong, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
The Group of Seven has scolded China and Russia, casting the Kremlin as malicious and Beijing as a bully, but beyond words, there were few concrete steps aside from expressing support for Taiwan and Ukraine.
Founded in 1975 as a forum for the West’s richest nations to discuss crises such as the OPEC oil embargo, the G7 this week addressed what it perceives as the biggest current threats: China, Russia and the coronavirus pandemic.
G7 foreign ministers, who met in London under tight coronavirus restrictions, said in a 12,400-word communique that Russia was trying to undermine democracies and threatening Ukraine while China was guilty of human rights abuses and of using its economic clout to bully others.

This was the first time a representative from ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) has been invited to attend a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting.
The UK’s invitation to the ASEAN Chair to attend the G7 meeting signals the UK’s emphasis on a closer alignment with the Indo-Pacific region, as outlined in the UK’s Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy published in March.
