MAG raises concerns over humanitarian aid cuts confirmed by UK government

Last week, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab published a long-awaited statement about the UK government plans to cut aid spending. But the announcement - and Raab s appearance before MPs on the International Development Committee - raised more questions than answers. All that s clear is the world s most vulnerable people will bear the brunt of the UK abandoning its commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on aid.
MAG has joined with hundreds of organisations to raise our concerns. Above all, we are worried about the impact on those in countries affected by conflict, where we know from our work on the ground that humanitarian need is often most acute. The cuts will fall heavily on humanitarian preparedness and response, with initial estimates revealing that the new budget represents a 34 per cent drop compared to last year and a 44 per cent drop against 2019.
Iran hands British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe another jail sentence
An Iranian court has handed British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe a new one-year jail sentence and travel ban on charges of spreading propaganda against the regime, her husband said on Monday.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe was first detained at a Tehran airport in April 2016 following a vacation to see her family with her daughter. She was accused of working with organizations allegedly attempting to overthrow the Iranian regime and was later convicted and sentenced to five years in jail.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her employer, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, have repeatedly denied the espionage charges against her. The case has sparked a dispute between Britain and Iran.

In 2016, Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was detained on charges of crimes related to national security, and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
She completed her five-year sentence in March 2021 in Tehran, and completed the latter part of her sentence under house arrest during the pandemic, returning to court later that month.
She was then tried on new charges of “propaganda against Iran”, her MP Tulip Siddiq said.
