The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) was first established in 1961 as an independent and non-profit making research institution. The NIIA, as an idea, was conceived by Dr. Kenneth Onwuka Dike, who wanted an institute like the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London and like the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. The conception predated Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960. As we have noted elsewhere, the cardinal objective of all the founding fathers was self-education and making Nigeria relevant in world affairs, particularly in Africa (vide ”The Problems of the NIIA, ThisDay, 24 May, 1999 and Bola A. Akinterinwa, Nigeria in the World: Issues and Problems for the Sleeping Giant (Lagos: Pumark, 2001, pp. 815-818).

My name is Sade Nixon. I am an undergraduate senior from Chicago, Illinois completing my degrees in Diplomacy and Modern Languages. I am currently studying Russian and French, both of which I make extensive use of since starting my internship with the United States Mission to the United Nations (USUN). I am currently interning with the Political Office of USUN, which handles US foreign policy as it pertains to Security Council activities.
The interconnectivity of my field is hitting me full force, and idea-mapping to trace ripple effects and possible overlap has been beneficial. RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Uruguayan female diplomatic officials charge that they have been victims of different situations of harassment, verbal abuse and discrimination for a long time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday, March 10th, in a press release.

Mirembe Nantongo served in the State Department for 25 years as a Foreign Service Generalist. Of Ugandan and Dutch parentage, she first worked for State as a Locally Employed staff member at U.S. Embassy Kampala, then spent six years as an Eligible Family Member before joining A-100 as a Foreign Service officer in 1995. She served and lived in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Washington, D.C., most recently as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Global Talent Management.
