BANGKOK, May 11 ― Three Myanmar journalists have been arrested in Thailand after fleeing across the border to escape a crackdown by the military junta, their employer has said.
The trio were set to appear in court today, their editor added, urging Thai authorities not to repatriate them to the coup-hit country.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, triggering a mass uprising as large swathes of the population take to the streets to demand democracy.

DVB said the three were arrested in a random search in the northern city of Chiang Mai.
They are expected to appear in court on Tuesday, faced with charges of illegally entering the country.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said officials were seeking a satisfactory way forward. Thai authorities concerned are coordinating to find possible humanitarian solution[s] to this case, Tanee told reporters.

The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand warned that the journalists would face certain arrest and persecution, if not worse if they were deported.

Three reporters and two activists from Myanmar have been arrested in Chiang Mai for illegal entry and face possible deportation, the reporters news organisation and local police said on Tuesday.

A press freedom advocacy group and a foreign correspondents’ organization in Thailand have urged authorities there to refrain from deporting three Myanmar journalists working for Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) who were arrested in northern Thailand on Sunday for illegal entry into the country.
The DVB said in a statement that three of its journalists were arrested in the Thai city of Chiang Mai’s San Sai district during a random search on Sunday and charged with illegal entry. The statement said all three had covered the anti-coup demonstrations that have been taking place in Myanmar since the military seized power in a Feb. 1 coup.
