Key changes under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Act

The central government recently notified the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Act. The amendment act aims to strengthen organisations' compliance mechanisms, enhance transparency and accountability in the use of foreign contributions and prevent the misuse of funds received from foreign contributions by certain organisations and instead promote the use of such funds by genuine non-governmental organisations which are working to improve the welfare of society.

Indian Government Regulation Squeezes Christian C

For Christians trying to care for the poor in India, there is always a need for more prayer, more hands, and more money. Much of that money comes from donors in other countries. Recently, though, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has tightened regulations on foreign funding to nonprofits, including Christian groups that feed orphans, run hospitals, and educate children. Since Modi took office in 2014, the Indian government has revoked permission for more than 16,000 nongovernmental organizations to receive foreign funding, using the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). “It is deliberately an assault against the nonprofit sector,” said Vijayesh Lal, the general secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India, “and that includes the churches.”

Philippine government warned against NGOs banned by India

Published March 3, 2021, 3:00 PM Consumer groups warned the Philippine government against non-government organizations (NGOs) such as those linked to Bloomberg Philanthropies that were banned by India for providing grants to lobby for local policies. They issued the statement after India banned more than 14,500 non-government organizations over the past five years, including four groups that received foreign grants from Bloomberg Philanthropies of US financial billionaire Michael Bloomberg which are reportedly involved in tobacco control lobbying. India canceled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licenses of these NGOs for reportedly acting against India’s national interests, misreporting donations, and lobbying against an established economic activity which raises multiple economic and social concerns.
