With regard to the Pact on Migration and Asylum, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union has committed itself to “bringing the positions of the Member States closer together” by the end of the present six-month period.
The Portuguese Minister for Home Affairs, Eduardo Cabrita, who chaired the informal videoconference of Home Affairs Ministers yesterday, reports that there is “progress” in the negotiation between the 27, emphasising the commitment of the Portuguese Presidency and the European Commission to finding a “balance between responsibility and solidarity” in the external aspect of migration and the relationship with third countries.
Eduardo Cabrita added that the Member States have made advances “on the technical level” in many of the dossiers that make up this agenda, for example, the regulation on the European Asylum Support Office, and that they are “very close to an overall agreement on the new asylum regulations”. The ASEAN Foreign Affairs Ministers concurred on the urgency to intensify ASEAN’s joint efforts to successfully implement the agreed initiatives and measures to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic and recover from its socio-economic impact, according to a press release.
At the invitation of his Bruneian counterpart Erywan Pehin Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn took part in an informal ASEAN ministerial meeting held on March 2 via video link.
According to the foreign affairs ministry’s press release, the ministers had an extensive in-depth “heart-to-heart” discussion on the ASEAN’s progress, how to strengthen and expand the group’s external relations, and the need to consolidate centrality in the evolving regional architecture.

The President of the Argentine Republic, Alberto Fernández, delivered a virtual keynote lecture this Wednesday, January 27, from the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, in which he advocated for the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean and for strengthening multilateralism to build fairer and more egalitarian societies.
The Argentine leader spoke during a high-level event in which Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, also participated along with Ennio Vivaldi, Rector of the University of Chile.
Attending the lecture were the Foreign Ministers of Chile, Andrés Allamand, and Argentina, Felipe Solá; the ambassadors of Argentina in Chile, Rafael Bielsa, and of Chile in Argentina, Nicolás Monckeberg; as well as a sizeable delegation.
