KABUL – Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Hanif Atmar spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau about expanding bilateral cooperation and the Afghan peace process.
Minister Atmar congratulated Marc Garneau on his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada and praised the good and effective relations between the two countries during the tenure of former Canadian Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne.
Minister Atmar spoke about the latest developments in peace and postponement of the Istanbul Conference due to non-participation of the Taliban, and the efforts to strengthen regional consensus supporting the Afghan peace process. The Canadian Foreign Minister assured Mr. Atmar of Canada s comprehensive efforts to strengthen international and regional consensus supporting peace in Afghanistan.

On 1 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis and his Canadian counterpart Marc Garneau discussed topical issues of bilateral and international cooperation.

Deadly attacks on peaceful protesters by Myanmar’s security forces continue. More than 60 people have been killed since the 1 February military coup ousted the civilian-led government. At least three protesters were shot dead on Monday, 8 March, in Myitkyina and Pyapon. A local National League for Democracy (NLD) official from Yangon, Khin Maung Latt, died on Sunday, 7 March, after being detained by police. His body reportedly displayed signs of torture. Since then two other NLD officials have also died in custody.
