Yesterday, Minister of Defence Matej Tonin, MSc, attended a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Defence Ministers’ configuration. The main topic of the ministers discussion was the current state of preparation of the Strategic Compass, with an emphasis on its first pillar - crisis management.
Initially, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell reported on his recent visit to Africa, in particular on the situation in Mozambique and the Sahel. High Representative Borrell also reported on the escalating situation in Ukraine, where the tense situation on the eastern border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation and in the illegally annexed Crimea persists. The ministers endorsed the EU s efforts to resolve the crisis against Ukraine, as well as the stabilization of the situation in the Sahel.

EU ministers of foreign affairs will be briefed about current affairs and exchange views on Western Balkans and transatlantic relations.
General Affairs Council, Tuesday 11 May
The Council will prepare for the special European Council meeting on 25 May 2021. Ministers will also focus on COVID-19 EU coordination and the Conference on the Future of Europe.
Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council, 17-18 May
Ministers will discuss about equity and inclusion in education and training, the European Universities initiative and participation of young people in decision-making processes. They will also focus on the sustainability of the creative sector, the Media and Audiovisual Action Plan and sport innovation.

At a meeting of the EU defence ministers as part of a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday, Romania s Defence Minister Nicolae Ciuca voiced support for the efforts to consolidate the operational level of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in an ambitious yet pragmatic manner, underscoring the importance of the Strategic Compass in drawing up directions to support the implementation of the EU s level of ambition.
According to a press statement released by the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN), Ciuca pointed out the importance of coherence of efforts both to reduce the gaps between political commitments and available capabilities, and in relation to commitments as part of other international formats and organisations, given the principle of a single set of forces, agerpres.ro confirms.
Washington is fleeing an open statement in defense of Taiwan
The Asian White House senior official has warned that stating that the US will defend Taiwan from a Chinese attack would lead to “bad sides”.
Washington has for decades maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” around Taiwan Taipei discouraged from proclaiming independence and from China’s military actions to kidnap the country. Beijing claims democratic Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory.
Some experts have called for a shift to “strategic clarity” make it clear to Beijing That the US would defend Taiwan. But Kurt Campbell, an Asian White House tsar, said the change was in jeopardy.
