Climate and energy diplomacy, a discussion with the foreign minister of Japan on the situation in Asia, and EU-UK cooperation in foreign and security policy were on the agenda of the FAC meeting in Brussels on Monday.
Covering current affairs, the EU foreign ministers also discussed transatlantic relations; Iran’s nuclear programme; the situation of migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina; developments in Hong Kong, Venezuela and Ethiopia; EU relations with Turkey; the EU’s strategy for sharing COVID-19 vaccines; the case of Giulio Regeni, who had been murdered in Egypt; and the situation in Russia.
With regard to the latter, Minister Rau stressed the need for an EU response to the deteriorating human rights situation in Russia, one example of which is the attempted murder, and now the arrest, of Alexei Navalny. High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has mandated Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto to visit Ethiopia and its neighbouring regions as the EU representative. Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto will travel to the Horn of Africa within the next few weeks. During the visit he will discuss the situation in Ethiopia and its neighbouring regions and ways how the international community could provide support in finding peaceful solutions. The topics to be discussed also include the humanitarian situation in the National Regional State of Tigray in Ethiopia. The European External Action Service and Finland will communicate on the matter in more detail as the visit approaches.

Urmas Reinsalu attends the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels today
Today 25 January, Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu is in Brussels to attend the Foreign Affairs Council.
The ministers will discuss the detention of Alexei Navalny, vaccine diplomacy as well as transatlantic relations. We witnessed another cynical step by the authorities of Russia when Navalny was arrested at the airport in Moscow, Minister Reinsalu said. Today I will propose the consideration of additional restrictive measures.
Urmas Reinsalu confirmed that Estonia would raise the introduction of the fourth sanctions package against officials who have used violence against the peaceful protestors of Belarus.
