THE 27 EU member states have given the green light for the post-Brexit trade deal to come into effect on 1 January, a spokesman has said.
Ambassadors from EU capitals met in Brussels to nod through the accord, using a procedure which will take effect at 2pm tomorrow.
This will provisionally allow tariff-free trade with Britain to continue after it leaves the EU single market at the New Year.
Sebastian Fischer, spokesman for the German presidency of the EU, said: “EU Ambassadors have unanimously approved the provisional application of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.”

A “Brexit concession” by the EU to Britain on fish stocks should be extended to all coastal states including Ireland, according to a leading Irish industry organisation.
The Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation (IS&WFPO) says that the EU has created a “new fisheries policy” in accepting the principle of “zonal attachment” in negotiations with Britain.
Minister for Marine Charlie McConalogue has confirmed quota cuts will be imposed for some fish species from April, after a temporary three-month quota rollover ends on March 31st.
In August, there was cause for celebration following the miraculous rescue of two cousins who spent 15 hours stranded at sea. Ellen Glynn and Sara Feeney got into difficulty after going paddleboarding at Furbo Beach in Co Galway. A major search and rescue operation was launched after the young women failed to return to shore and many feared the worst.

The next morning, however, the pair were discovered by local fisherman Patrick Oliver and his son Morgan. Oliver used his fishing experience to predict where the young women might have drifted and located them some 17 miles from where they had last been seen.
