As of the time of writing, the team had made visits to the Hubei Center for Disease Control and Prevention; the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. State media also reported that the WHO team visited “an exhibition featuring Chinese people fighting the epidemic,” raising concerns that the trip could prove to be little more than a public relations move even as the origins of the coronavirus remain heavily politicized and uncertain (Global Times, January 31)

EDITORIAL: Myanmar coup a boon for Beijing

EDITORIAL: Myanmar coup a boon for Beijing On Monday, fitness instructor Khing Hnin Wai was filming an aerobics video on the main road leading to Myanmar’s parliament compound in the country’s capital, Naypyidaw. Behind her, a convoy of armored vehicles streamed past, headed toward the seat of the Burmese government. Oblivious to the events unfolding around her, Khing carries on dancing. The video quickly went viral, and although it provides an amusing, incongruous take on the events, the military takeover is no laughing matter. It is a disaster, and not just for Burmese, as it could also have long-term strategic implications for Taiwan and neighboring nations.

EDITORIAL: Chinese braggadocio falls flat

EDITORIAL: Chinese braggadocio falls flat Beijing is fond of testing new US presidents before they have had time to get their feet under the desk and measure the drapes in the Oval Office. True to form, on Saturday just three days after the inauguration of US President Joe Biden the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force dispatched 13 aircraft including nuclear-capable bombers and fighter jets into Taiwan’s southwest air defense identification zone. This was followed on Sunday by another incursion into the same airspace by 15 aircraft. The weekend’s sorties were clearly intended as an early test of the Biden administration’s resolve over Taiwan. Acting in concert, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) propaganda machine has been working overtime, unleashing a clumsy charm offensive on the Biden administration, while pouring opprobrium on former US president Donald Trump and his administration’s officials.
