COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has taken steps to reserve seven high-end star-rated hotels for quarantine purposes of Sri Lankan migrant workers returning to the country.
Only employees registered with the Foreign Employment Bureau are entitled to undergo quarantine at these locations, free of charge, Mangala Randeniya, the Deputy General Manager and Spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) told News 1st on Wednesday (Apr. 21).
So far, more than 430 Sri Lankan migrant workers have been repatriated to the island under this programme of providing free quarantine facilities, he noted.
“Several hotels maintained under the Foreign Employment Bureau will be used for this purpose. Accordingly, seven 03-star hotels were obtained by the bureau for this purpose and the SLBFE will bear the costs incurred for providing the quarantine facilities. The Vavuniya Magistrate s Court has remanded a woman arrested on suspicion of human trafficking until the 26th of this month.
She has been involved in sending young females to Oman in the pretext of offering employment.
According to an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Foreign Employment, the suspect was arrested by the Poovarasankulama Police yesterday (12) while she was in the Pampamaduwa Army Quarantine Center in Vavuniya.
Investigations by the Foreign Employment Bureau have revealed that the woman had run a foreign employment agency in the Mahiyanganaya area.
She had attracted young women promising to offer them jobs in Oman. However she had sent these young unsuspecting females to the Sultans of Oman as sex workers.
